Hello! I’m Wil Hromek
I am a UX Designer from Ellicott City, Maryland with a background in Visual Arts and Game Design. As a designer, I strive to make user systems that are simple and intuitive.
I recently discovered your listing for a UX Designer through Linkedin and want to get in touch. Before becoming a designer, I graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art with a concentration in Animation/Interactive Media and pursued a career in the game development industry. I initially developed my skills as a 3D artist, but as I continued to pursue post-graduate courses and took on work as a freelance artist I discovered that what motivated me was a desire to push user interactivity to the best it can be. As I’ve transitioned to a career in UX I’ve built upon my experience as a graphic designer to emphasize usability and intuitive design in everything I create.
My background as a game designer gives me a unique perspective on UX design. My previous work taught me the importance of keeping a consistent and realistic vision for my projects, as well as the necessity of documentation when working within an iterative design process. Additionally, I’ve developed an understanding of clear communication in order to both create clear documentation of my design choices and address issues where ideas and execution do not match.
As someone who enjoys both playing games and learning how they work, I want to join the WB Games New York team for many reasons:
Teamwork: I have worked as a part of multiple game development teams in the past, either as a project manager or directly with lead artists and programmers in order to keep teams running smoothly and ensure our goals were clear and achievable. According to your website this position would allow me to work directly with your engineers, which I would welcome in order to ensure the design steps from concept to implementation go as smoothly as possible.
Learning: According to your job listing there are multiple tools, services, and technology members of your team are expected to be familiar with. As a hobbyist game developer I have a passion for understanding new systems and enjoy picking up new skills to give my projects an extra push.
Innovation: I am a self-motivated worker who works best when presented with unorthodox problems. Often as a designer I am faced with creating solutions for interaction problems that are not immediately obvious during the concept phase, and am quick to revise my designs for usability testing.
Below I have selected examples of my most recent work that display my skill at creating interactive prototypes, designing readable UI elements, and iterating upon wireframes through multiple stages of design:

Steam Helpchat
As a work exercise, I wanted to create a new feature for an already-existing gaming app. As a long-time Steam user I decided to capitalize on the platform’s strengths as a community and design a live chatting feature for Steam users to share and curate information within their gaming niche. While Steam already allows users to communicate via group chats and forums, I believed that the best features of both could be combined to create a more positive experience for new users seeking out information from more experienced community members.
Working within an existing brand’s identity and community was important to me because users are what Steam one of the largest digital marketplaces in the industry. Many of WB Games’s products remain incredibly popular on the service, so making sure I understand your customers is one of my top priorities.
Muse
For a museum navigation app, I designed a system based around scanning QR codes to let museum visitors quickly connect with information about the works they viewed. This system required interconnectivity and simple navigation, as any single artwork could lead viewers to multiple more within the same gallery. I was tasked with designing a system that users could use to find information in as few steps as possible.
One of WB Games’s guiding principles is centering your users and ensuring they have the best experience possible with your products. Ensuring those who use my designs are left satisfied instead of frustrated is what drives me to explore every possible solution before I put my work in front of someone as a finished product.
Dream Cruise
As part of fleshing out a responsive user flow for a cruise booking website, I had to create both low- and high-fidelity wireframes for multiple steps of the booking process. These wireframes were later used to create an interactive prototype which I used to further refine interactions between multiple screens in order to ensure the overall user experience was clear and easy to navigate.
I always strive to improve upon my work, especially when a small change across multiple items would add up to a greater overall experience. WB Games encourages experimentation, and often ideas that cause me the greatest frustration evolve into my most impressive projects.
